Do You Believe in Miracles?

By Ben LaCorte, Creation Tours

Smart people say silly things all the time. They say them over and over again, and before you know it, the rest of us start believing them. A famous philosopher once defined a miracle as something that would never happen if nature had its way. That part’s true! A miracle is a temporary suspension of the laws of nature. But since the God who created the law can also set it aside, nature doesn’t always get its way.

Another “brilliant thinker” said that miracles happen so rarely – a reasonable person is better off not believing in them. Well, we know they don’t happen all the time. That’s why we call them … miracles. But if they happen at all, that’s a good reason to believe in them.

So what’s the evidence? The Bible chronicles many miracles, sometimes naming the time in history, the place and who was there. These historical accounts were then written down and distributed within the lifetime of the eyewitnesses. Those witnesses could have refuted the stories. They could have said “Hey, those things never happened.” But the eyewitnesses didn’t say that. Why? Because they did happen.

Take our friendly neighborhood skeptic. He will say the Bible is untrustworthy – in part because it talks about miracles. These are the very same miracles that he – before even analyzing the evidence, decided cannot occur. That’s called “circular reasoning”. It’s when your conclusion is the same as your claim. Here’s an example: You should trust me because I’m trustworthy. Sorry, but you have to give me more evidence. Just saying, “You can’t believe in miracles because miracles are unbelievable”, won’t work.

End of the day, there’s no logical reason for believing that miracles are impossible. No evidence says they cannot happen – but plenty that says they can… and do!
God created the laws of nature. His Son, Our Lord upholds all things and in Him all things hold together. Nature was created by Him, through Him and for Him. He directs His creation so that we would better understand who He is. “Though you don’t believe in Me” said our Lord, “believe in the miracles, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I in the Father” John 10:38
